Leather Gifts – An Affordable Luxury – Leather Processing

Leather Processing is regarded as a conventional endeavor and the methodology involved differs from country to country. The procedure depends upon mainly the expertise, and the available tools to take care of the skin and making it use in a daily life style.

Animal Leather is used from the Stone Age in most countries for a variety of purposes like clothes, bed spreads, floor spreads for comfortable sitting, to draw water from wells and to draw water from distant places. Hence, the method differs from place to place, people to people, who have been involved in searching, chopping and de-skinning the critters.

Ever since, man discovered alternatives to his clothes requirements, the animal skin found its way to various other utilities such as clothes of different designs, shapes and sizes, bags, pouches and wallets, hand gloves, footwear, saddles and straps, etc..

Here’s the system of leather processing within my own experience.

Typically, the skin after stripped off the slaughtered animal, finds its way from the marketplace as processed leather within 3 months. In this dull period, the leather undergoes various procedures of therapy, right from salting for maintaining the raw skin to the period of stacking and transport to Leather Tanneries. Then, so accumulated raw skins are soaked in tanks of lime for a couple of days. This procedure swells and softens the skins to make simple removal of hair. Hair is shaved-removed following de-liming. From this point onwards the skin is called leather. This leather under process needs to be again experience re-liming, bating, soaking in drums. For this procedure chemicals and tanning agents like chromium, softening agents like fat spirits etc. are used.

Modern Industries use massive drums made from Teak wood (Sagwan), rotatable by electrical motors for such tanning, softening and bleach procedure of the leather. The leather processed by these methods then place on hangars in a shaded place to get dried. The dried leather passes through different shaving, dividing, stretching, and polishing procedure until it turned into fully soft to the necessary level, color, and thickness.

Ultimately the processed leather is quantified in Square Feet (SqFt) and DeciMetres (DCM). To get a precise measurement, the leather is put level, fully stretched across the conveyor system of a measuring machine and passed via a controlled unit that electronically displays the dimension of the leather.

Leather is processed into the required softness. Every item of leather needs its own amount of softness. Softness of this leather is different from product to product such as Leather Shoe Soles, Leather Saddles and Leather Cycle Seats, Leather belts for industrial, animal and human use, Footwear, Shoes, Sandals and Chappals, Leather Boxes, Bowls and Luggage Bags, Leather pouches, wallets and Ladies Hand Bags, Leather cases for Many industrial purposes, gift items. These Leather articles demand different amount of softness.
